INTRODUCTION

Providing medical care for 45 Custody Suites and 4 Sexual Assault Referral Centres.

Police custody healthcare provision is traditionally operated through contractual relationships between Police forces and healthcare providers such as ourselves, with the purpose of maintaining physical and mental healthcare standards of detainees and also providing a forensic and legal medical service.

Custody healthcare has always tended to be outsourced outside the NHS, sub-contracted to independent sector providers who have most commonly employed Forensic Physicians and Custody Nurses. Often there are liaison schemes in place with other health and social care services and increasingly, police forces are experimenting with nurse-led provision when it comes to the healthcare of a detainee.

Police custody healthcare is at a key stage of the criminal justice pathway where NHS commissioned healthcare is not routinely available, which can impede an individual’s access to NHS services when most needed hence where a company such as ourselves would ultimately come in to play.
